April’s installment of 7 Questions With… AAAL Members features Tim Janewski, Director of Library Services, The King’s University Library.
1. When was the last time you were nervous? Presenting to 45 very smart (and mostly young) people at the Edmonton Progressive Librarian’s Guild Symposium in March. I’m not sure whether my fear of not being smart enough or feeling out of place because of my age was stronger. But the young folk were all very nice to me.
2. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Learn how to remember people’s names.
3. If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? Advocating for LGBTQ+ equality in libraries – and everywhere!
4. What is your best piece of career advice? Always check to see whose name is in the “To” field of your email before clicking “Send”. Including the wrong name in the wrong message can be hazardous to your career health.
5. What is your favourite thing to binge watch? Sense8
6. What is your proudest work-related accomplishment? Working with great people to put together the awesome NEOS Strategic Agenda 2014-17. We rocked that plan!
7. What is your proudest non-work related accomplishment? Raising two amazing kids with my wife.

Thanks to the hard work of AAAL Committees and Executive members, we have a busy day of networking and learning planned, including our AAAL business meeting in the morning, and a full slate of presentations in the afternoon. We are also excited to have Nancy Chick (Academic Director for the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning) and Caitlin McClurg (Teaching and Learning Librarian at the University of Calgary) joining us after lunch to provide the day’s keynote on librarians and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Lunch, as always, will be provided by the AAAL.

The Alberta Association of Academic Libraries (AAAL) Spring 2016 Meeting will take place on Thursday, April 14, at the University of Calgary in the Gallery Hall of the Taylor Family Digital Library.
This is the last call for Lightning Strike session submissions. Please consider submitting a proposal for a 15 minute session on something new or engaging that is happening at your library, or on a topic applicable to academic libraries in our province! What new services or programs is your library providing? How is your library engaging users in new ways? What is your library doing to make learning resources more openly accessible to users? How are you supporting teaching and research at your institutions?

The AAAL Nominations Committee is seeking nominations for the following 2 AAAL Executive Committee positions, in preparation for elections which will take place at the Spring AGM.
Responsibilities include: attending executive meetings, taking minutes of meetings and executive committee, keeping accurate records of AAAL accounts, submitting accounting records to auditors, submitting reports at each general meeting and biannual reports to the chair.
Responsibilities include: attending executive meetings, maintaining liaison with other library associations, calling for standing committee members as needed, conducting general meetings in Chair’s absence, submitting biannual reports to the chair, and performing other duties as assigned by the Chair.
