The Alberta Library seeking new CEO

Working closely with an executive committee of nine members, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reports to and takes direction from the Board of Directors via the Board Chair.  The CEO is appointed by the Executive Committee and assessed by the same.  The CEO is an ex officio member of all The Alberta Library committees including the Executive Committee and all project teams.  The CEO leads a team of six direct reports including Finance Manager, ORC Coordinator, Licensing Librarian, Training Librarian, IT Librarian, and an Executive Assistant.

The CEO identifies, develops, and prioritizes services, projects, and budgets in alignment with the TAL Strategic Plan and under the direction of the Board.  The CEO recommends strategies and services for consideration by the Board to respond to current and future challenges and opportunities.  An integral part of the CEO’s role is to review, plan, implement and evaluate TAL services.  Through innovation and collaboration, the CEO seeks continuous improvement to TAL’s services for member organizations and for Alberta’s library community.  The CEO facilitates relationship building among members from different sectors and from stakeholder organizations.

Concordia Library’s Single Service Desk

Concordias New Library Service DeskThis past summer we made the switch from having three separate service desks to one single desk. And so far, the move has been a real hit with our students, faculty and staff.

Previously, when our three service desks were tucked away in their isolated corners, students were sent across the main floor from one desk to another. Now that our services are all in one place, a student can get help with looking for articles, printing, and checking out a book all in one go.

Our desk has also changed (we think) how people perceive library staff. At our new desk, which is now out front and center by the library’s main doors, we’ve had many students and faculty comment on how accessible and open we are.  If you happen to be in the Highlands area of Edmonton stop by and have a look at our spiffy new desk.

NorQuest Library’s New Website

NorQuest Library is thrilled to show off its new website http://library.norquest.ca

The library team began a client-centred website redesign project back in January 2014. We started by surveying college staff and students. We asked about the usability of our existing site and asked for input on a wishlist of features. We gathered data about mobile and device use. We even have a good idea why our clients are accessing our website. At the end of the survey, we asked interested students to participate in one of two focus groups. In these sessions we picked our top five websites and asked students to comment on their various features. Did you know anything with too many words on it represents “an essay”! The information gathered from our clients was combined with best practices to build the site we have today. The College’s adoption of Kentico CMS enabled a fully responsive design. The library staff retain full control over website content. The site is fluid and ever changing. It is a constant work in progress. This site is a giant leap forward for NorQuest Library Services and we are grateful for the hard work and dedication of the web development staff in our Marketing division. Onwards and upwards.
