Call for AAAL Financial Statement Auditors

AAAL is seeking two auditors to review our 2025-2026 Financial Statement. The yearly review of our Financial Statement is a key piece for renewing our status as a Society.

What does auditing entail? Essentially, you would look at our financial transactions for the year, as presented on the Financial Statement, and make sure that there are no irregular transactions.

In reality, you do not need to cross-check every single transaction, but if you would like to verify a transaction, you will have the supporting documentation (e.g., bank statements, receipts) to do so.

Once you are satisfied that the financial information is correct, you would sign the Financial Statement, and return that document to the AAAL Treasurer.

If we do not submit our yearly paperwork to the Alberta Government, the ultimate consequence is that AAAL would lose its status as a Society and have to give away all of our money.

If you are interested in serving AAAL in this capacity, or if you would like more information, please contact Yvonne Phillips, AAAL Treasurer, at yvonne.phillips@rdpolytech.ca by June 26, 2026.

Call for AAAL’s Mentorship Micro-Residences Working Group

The Alberta Association of Academic Libraries (AAAL) is seeking 1 co-chair and 3-4 volunteers for AAAL’s Mentorship Micro-Residences Working Group. You would work with the working group’s chair, Caitlin Ratcliffe, to create and implement a Micro-residencies program which would allow AAAL library staff to spend a day at another AAAL library, shadowing the work of one or many staff at the host location.

This Working group’s work would begin in June 2026, for a two year term (from Spring 2026- Spring 2028) with the possibility of renewal.

All staff (library assistants, library staff, pages, library technicians, librarians, managers  etc) from AAAL member institutions are eligible. We ask that interested candidates include a brief statement of interest (2-3 sentences) in your email.

Please forward your interest to Caitlin Ratcliffe at caitlin.ratcliffe@norquest.ca before June 12th 2026.

AAAL Changes to Welcome NEOS

AAAL is pleased to announce changes to our bylaws that allow us to expand our reach to be a more welcoming and inclusive library organization while enhancing services for our current members.

The new bylaws can be read fully on our website here: https://aaal.ca/about/bylaws/. These changes were prompted by the recommendations from the Welcoming and Including NEOS Members to AAAL: A Recommendation Document.

Key changes in the bylaws include:

  • Special Libraries in Alberta can now be AAAL members (form coming soon)
  • Student associations of library technician and librarian programs in Alberta can now be AAAL members (form coming soon)
  • The creation of communities of practice
  • Increased the maximum number of subcommittee members, which will allow us to expand our current professional development offerings.

As a result, you will soon see:

  • The creation of an AAAL Community of Practice around resource sharing
  • The creation of an AAAL Working Group for a pilot project of a Micro-residencies program
  • A call for additional members for the AAAL Learning & Development Committee
  • A call for additional members for the AAAL  Mentorship Committee

Please consider volunteering and participating when you see these calls come out.

AAAL has also already been able to institute the following, instigated by our Welcoming and Including NEOS Members to AAAL: A Recommendation Document:

Thank you to all of the AAAL Executive, AAAL Subcommittee members, AAAL members, NEOS members, directors, and, of course, Anne Carr-Wiggin for their expertise, advice, and efforts in this transition. This is an opportunity for AAAL to serve a larger, more diverse community of library professionals and create a stronger and revitalized professional voice across the province.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Céline Gareau-Brennan, AAAL Chair at celine.gareau-brennan@ualberta.ca
